ESL Schools
The Columbus City Schools offers ESL classes at 10 high schools, 8 middle schools, and 30 elementary schools.
All ESL teachers are trained in second language acquisition theory and best practices for teaching students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds. Bilingual instructional assistants are provided for each ESL class to facilitate communication between school and home and to assist with instruction in the classroom.

Elementary School

Students in grades K-5 may receive ESL support at one of 30 elementary schools in Columbus. While each building may implement the program slightly differently, the general design is for students to participate in regular classes for the majority of the day. For a small portion of the day, usually between 30-60 minutes, LEP students are "pulled out" of their regular classes to meet with the ESL teacher for intensive language instruction and content area support.

Middle School

At the middle school level, students in grades 6-8 participate in regular classes for the majority of the school day. In place of a regular English class, LEP students are assigned to an ESL class. Here, students receive intensive instruction in all aspects of the English language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) as well as assistance with content area subjects.

High School
At the high school level, students in grades 9-12 participate in regular classes for the majority of the school day. In place of a regular English class, LEP students are assigned to an ESL class. Here, students receive intensive instruction in all aspects of the English language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) as well as assistance with content area subjects.

Students in some high schools may also participate in Sheltered Content classes for math, science, or social studies. These classes, while targeting the same academic content standards as regular content area classes, are taught at a level appropriate for LEP students by highly qualified teachers in both ESL and the content area.

NOTE: Students who enroll in high school without evidence of prior high school enrollment (in the US or another country) may be placed in Grade 9 until proof of prior high school enrollment is presented."
