Gifted Professional Development Content

The new Gifted Operating Standards set by the state require the professional development to address specific competencies including the selection, creation, modification and implementation of differenitated curriculum that is accelerated and complex, an understanding of the unique social-emotional traits and other characteristics of diverse gifted learners, the use of assessment data for gifted identification and progress monitoring, and creation of Written Education Plans. To assist teachers with aligning their professional development with these competencies, the district will develop and offer professional development using the best-practice recommendations of the Ohio Association for Gifted Children and correlated to Teacher Preparation standards set by the National Association for Gifted Children and Council for Exceptional Children. Teachers will be guided to acquire hours on the following topics:
  • Year 1 (30 hours total)
    • Gifted identification (1.5 hours)
    • Characteristics of Gifted Learners (3.5 hours)
    • Higher Level Thinking Skills (10 hours)
    • Lesson Planning for Gifted Instruction (15 hours)
  • Year 2 (30 hours total)
    • Differentiation for Gifted Instruction (15 hours)
    • Development of Written Education Plans (5 hours)
    • Academic Acceleration (5 hours)
    • Mentorship and Independent Study for Gifted Learners (5 hours)
  • Year 3 and Beyond (6 hours per year)
    • Specialized Topics based on Job Assignment and Professional Growth Goals (6 hours per year)
