Special Needs Education: Orthopedically Impaired
The Columbus City Schools (CCS) Orthopedically Impaired program provides opportunities to learn the skills that will lead to an independent, productive, and self-fulfilling adult life. This includes skills in academic areas, functional daily living skills, pre-vocational and vocational skills, and job opportunities.

A diagnosis of a health or orthopedic handicap must be completed by a licensed physician and a copy received by the program supervisor before eligibility can be determined. The evaluation, including medical evaluation, may be arranged through Columbus City Schools (CCS) at no cost to the parents.

If it is determined that the students’ physical or health handicap will adversely affect educational performance, an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) will be designed and written prior to enrollment. Parents are important contributors to this document.

Students in need of an augmentative or alternative communication system are served by speech and communication specialists. Child-care attendants serve the personal needs of severely handicapped students which include cleaning intermittent catheterizations. Students may also receive occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and adapted physical education.

NOTE: Classes are located in regular CCS buildings located in various parts of the city. However, some students may require instruction while confined to a hospital or agency
