W. Shawna Gibbs, a passionate advocate for children and families, has won election to the Columbus Board of Education three times: in 2007, 2011 and 2015. Currently, she serves as Chair of the Boards’ Innovation and Reform Committee, Facilities Master Plan Committee, and the Neighborhood School Development Partnership.

She is also a trustee for I Know I Can and the Ohio School Boards Association, and a liaison to the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Ms. Gibbs is an avid supporter of the Accounting Careers Awareness Program (ACAP), WrightChoice and City Year. She is also the creator of the Shirley Chisholm Conference for Girls in Government, the Dr. Alexa Canady Conference for Future Doctors and Dentists, and the Morning of H.O.P.E. for Teen Suicide Prevention.

Born and raised in Brittany Hills, Ms. Gibbs is a proud graduate of the Columbus Alternative High School and Clark Atlanta University in Georgia. She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and Faith Ministries Church, where Dr. C. Dexter Wise III is Pastor. She enjoys NASCAR, football, boating and gardening.

Her honors include: Role Model Magazine’s '25 Courageous Women & Girls'; Business First's ‘40 Under Forty’ Award; LeaderSpark’s ‘Change Agent Award’; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s ‘Education Jewel Award’; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s ‘Award of Excellence’; and the National Council Women of Negro Women “Outstanding Leadership & Achievement” Award.

Of her many achievements, she believes her highest honor is being called mommy, sister, soror, auntie, mentor, and friend.
