Nolan's Knights Conquer!

The annual Nolan’s Knights Elementary Chess Tournament was held at the Columbus Metropolitan Library on Friday, May 19. Forty-five students from the following schools competed in four three rounds of official tournament play: Berwick, Clinton, Colerain, Columbus Gifted Academy, Ecole Kenwood, East Linden, Gables, Huy, Indian Springs, Indianola, Maize, East Linden, and Westgate. Community volunteers from Ohio State University and Columbus Chess Academy assisted with judging and scoring, and the tournament’s namesake, former Columbus City Schools educator, Francie Nolan, was on hand to welcome students and assist with awards.

Top finishers included:

  • James Oram (Columbus Gifted Academy, 1st place)
  • Isaac Meske (Columbus Gifted Academy, 2nd place)
  • Evander Hazelwood (Huy Elementary, 3rd place)
  • Thaddeus Burton (Berwick, 4th place)

Five additional students were honored with the prestigious Nolan’s Knights award baed on nominations by their chess coaches as a result of their sportsmanship, persistence, and dedication to the game:

  • Zaniah Gibson (East Linden)
  • Noah Shingler (East Linden)
  • Joseline Castaneda Cardona (East Linden)
  • Evander Hazelwood (Huy Elementary)
