Rookies No More

The W. Arthur Cullman Rookie Chess Tournament took place last Tuesday, May 16, at the Columbus Museum of Art. Eighteen elementary schools sent 110 students to compete in four rounds of chess, resulting in a trophy winner from each table. High school chess club students from Northland, CAHS and Centennial monitored the competition. Special guests included Dr. Dan Good (Superintendent of Columbus City Schools), Matt Barnes (NBC4 News Anchor), Gregg Dodd (Director of Marketing for the Columbus Metropolitan Library), Michael Stinziano (Columbus City Council Member), and Francie Nolan (former Columbus City Schools educator and founder of the district chess program). Participating schools were Avondale, Berwick, Clinton, Colerain, CGA, Devonshire, East Linden, Ecole Kenwood, Gables, Huy, Indian Springs, Indianola, Innis, Liberty, Maize, Parkmoor, Weinland Park and Westgate.

Table winners included the following young scholars: Nikhil Arunchalam (Ecole Kenwood), Oumar Cisse (Ecole Kenwood), Rikito Deanda (Devonshire), Ayana Hussein (Huy), Jennifer Johnson (Parkmoor), Sotto Lai (Columbus Gifted Academy), Ahnaf Mamun (Gables), Joshua Martin Jr. (Avondale), Carter McCabe (Columbus Gifted Academy), Samaury McKinley (Colerain), Keegan Milungi (Indianola), Kshitiz Niroula (Innis), Benjamin Rider-Blitzer (Clinton), America Sanchez (Gables), Shane Sylvester (Maize), Arthur Trittman (Clinton), Aviv White (Columbus Gifted Academy).
