CCS hosts weekly Zoom sessions addressing the most pressing topics and answering the most common questions families have. Called Virtual Family Engagement Sessions, these sessions are hosted by the Department of Communications and Engagement and feature expert District staff and many of our community partners sharing information and insights on important topics.

Summer Opportunities #4 - High School (3/23/23)
During this Virtual Family Engagement Session, we spotlight summer opportunities for High School students - including opportunities for Internship, Community Service, and Employment - with our partners at IMPACT Community Action, Franklin Park Conservatory, and the Ohio Farm Bureau. Plus, we'll remind you how to sign up for the popular (and free) CCS Summer Experience.

Ohio State Summer Camps (3/21/23)
During this special Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, we spotlight summer opportunities for CCS students from our partners at The Ohio State University. Hear about summer fun provided by the OSU Extension Office 4-H program, the Center for Automotive Research, the College of Nursing, OSU’s world languages and cultures program, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, and the OSU Philosophy and Critical Thinking Summer Camp.

The 2023 CCS Summer Experience is four weeks of exciting school and community-based learning experiences… and it’s FREE to all current Pre-K through 12th Grade students. Free Help to Fix Your Home (3/7/23)
As winter thaws and spring nears, have you noticed dangerous health or safety hazards in need of repair around your home? Our partners at the City of Columbus Housing Division have a number of free programs to assist families with a variety of high-priority housing-based repairs, such as mold and moisture, pests, injury and safety hazards, poor indoor air quality, carbon monoxide, and the identification and removal of lead-based paint. During our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, hear what you need to do this Spring to take advantage of this free help from the City.

New High School Safety Investments (2/28/23)
Columbus City Schools has launched a multi-million-dollar package of safety investments – including the recent installation of new high-tech scanner and detection systems at high school entrances – to enhance security measures significantly. We know students and parents may have questions. Our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session is an opportunity to hear answers. Stress Less Kids and Parents (2/23/23)
Even for our younger students, life can be increasingly complicated with social media, demanding school workload, and the exhaustion that comes with an active daily life. And for parents, the worry we have for our children adds to our own stress. Let’s try to find a way for all of us to stress less. During our Thursday Virtual Family Engagement Session, our friends from Enriching Kidz share ways to help your child work with their stress early on. We hear tips to teach kids relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and insights on how stress affects them AND parents.

Columbus Rec & Parks Summer Sign Up (2/21/23)
Now is the time to start planning for your child’s Summer Break. Over the next several weeks, the Columbus City Schools Engagement team shares a wide variety of summer opportunities. We begin with the summer camps provided by Columbus Recreation & Parks. Community centers offer themed, week-long camps for kids ages 6-12. During our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, our friends from CRPD talk about the activities coming this summer, including arts, crafts, sports, games, science experiments and nature exploration… and they share how CCS families can be among the first in line to sign up for these popular camps.

Digital Danger: Online Predators (2/16/23)
A new report reveals that 1 in 10 tweens and 1 in 7 teens have already encountered predatory behaviors from someone online. From pretending to be a trusted friend to luring children with games and even manipulating them with blackmail, online predators can be harder to spot than ever before. During our Thursday Virtual Family Engagement Session, our long-time partners at Bark help parents recognize the risks and take steps to protect children from online predators.

Third Grade Reading Guarantee (2/14/23)
If you’re the parent of a child who has trouble learning to read, you need to know about Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee, also known as the 3GRG. The Ohio Department of Education recently raised the score required to pass the 3GRG, which could impact several third graders who would be prevented from moving on to fourth grade. During our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, our Literacy Team provides parents with more insight into the 3GRG and shares resources you can use at home.

Black Girl Dad Week (2/9/23)
Research demonstrates that the presence of supportive fathers in daughters' lives can have huge impacts on girls' self-esteem, academic and career success, and relationships. Sponsored by the Columbus Urban League, Black Girl Dad Week 2023 celebrates these important relationships and gives families and role models a chance to make lasting memories together. During our Thursday Virtual Family Engagement Session, hear more about this impactful week of activities ranging from educational to celebratory, culminating in a father-daughter dance that's sure to be memorable. Plus, learn some tips and strategies from local experts on different ways fathers can be more present in their daughters’ lives.

Pathway Express: Statehouse (2/7/23)
Since 1857, the Statehouse has witnessed Ohio’s most historic voting decisions. In addition to state leaders, more than 500,000 visitors tour Capitol Square each year. Throughout February, CCS students and families are invited to add their names to the growing guestbook during the latest stop on our Pathway Express. During our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, we preview this month’s Pathway Express events and share how your family can get special guided tours, Statehouse souvenir gift bags, Scholastic book giveaways, and more.

School Choice Lottery Help (2/2/23)
Need help entering into the School Choice Lottery? Have questions about the process or how to access parent portal? CCS families have an opportunity to send their children to schools outside their home neighborhood or to school with specialized programming through our unique School Choice Lottery. Juniors and Seniors in Columbus City Schools, this is for you: More than $100 million in scholarships go unclaimed each year. If you’re hoping to minimize student debt, save money on college tuition, or maybe even get a college education for FREE, our friends at I Know I Can want to help. During our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, the college access experts from I Know I Can talk through the process of applying for college scholarships and will showcase the Columbus Promise - an opportunity for graduating CCS seniors to attend Columbus State Community College totally tuition-free.

Free Family Adventure at Spruce Run (1/26/23)
Columbus City Schools invites you on a free family adventure at our very own Spruce Run Nature Center. Our Thursday Virtual Family Engagement Session showcases the district’s 50-acre nature preserve just north of town to share about the upcoming Free Family Open House at Spruce Run - on Saturday, February 4 - which will include an opportunity for children to meet some of the animals found in the woods and creek.

But for others, the scenes they envision are of family conflict and tension. So what can you do? Plenty. During our Thursday Virtual Family Engagement Session - our last before the upcoming Winter Break - our friends from the Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Programs share tips and strategies for strengthening family relationships. Learn some ways for dealing with various types of relational conflict between family members over the holidays.

Holiday Help with the Salvation Army (11/10)
As our community sets to enter the holiday season, several of our district’s partners are stepping up to provide help to families who might need extra assistance, including gifts and food. Our Thursday Virtual Family Engagement Session features our partners at the Salvation Army of Central Ohio, who will share information on what families can do now to get help in time for the holidays. We also talk about ways CCS families can give back to help others in our community throughout the holiday season.

Jumpstart College/College Cred Plus (11/1/22)
The College Credit Plus provides students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking courses from Ohio colleges. Best of all: College Credit Plus is free for CCS students - no cost for tuition, books or fees. During our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, the experts from our Higher Education Partnership team answer questions about this program aimed at promoting rigorous academic pursuits and providing a wide variety of options to college-ready students.

The Columbus City Schools Pathway Express returns this school year, and students, families, and staff can expect a host of new, exciting learning experiences. The outside-the-box, community-based learning experiences kick off in October with FREE admission to the Ohio History Center. Catch a Ride with COTA (9/27/22)
Getting to activities after classes or on the weekends - like tutoring, the library, football games, part-time jobs, and even having some fun - should be easier this year for our high school students… and maybe for their parents as well. Columbus City Schools is partnering with COTA for a special Educational Pass - unlimited COTA rides at no cost. During our Tuesday Virtual Family Engagement Session, our partners at COTA share some tips and strategies for students to maximize their free COTA pass and safely catch a ride. They also share information about a special pilot program that offers 50% off COTA fares to qualifying adult riders.

Columbus City Schools and the Columbus Crew have officially kicked-off a new partnership to promote improved school attendance as part of the "Stay in the Game! Keep Learning, Every Day" Network. The application process is easy. Bus Routes and Transportation Help (9/1/22)
The safe transportation of students every day is an important job and one that Columbus City Schools takes seriously. The District recently transitioned to a new routing system meant to streamline our process. But in the first few days of the new school year, our Transportation team has identified several issues impacting our students getting to and from school. As our transportation team works diligently to resolve the issues, they'll take time during this Virtual Family Engagement Session to explain how they are correcting the routing system and helping students who have yet to be routed.

How was your child’s first day back in the classroom? On Monday, Columbus City Schools students and teachers returned to full-time, in-person learning in our school buildings. We want to hear how your child's first day of school went. Alternative Online Learning Plan (8/23/22)
Columbus City Schools begins the new school year with online learning only. To help families, our district's Academic team has created an online learning resource guide designed to be a one-stop shop on how to approach online learning and ensure student success. During this Virtual Family Engagement Session, we guide families through the alternative online learning plan for these first days of the new school year and review how attendance will continue to be important.

Ready to Go Back to School (8/18/22)
With the start of the new school year less than a week away, we want to give families an opportunity to hear about plans for the first day and ask questions about the District's Alternative Opening Plans to help families make essential preparations. During this first virtual session of the year, we'll also share information on the CCS Back-to-School Family Resource Fair and our online Back to School Hub.
