CCS Graduation Requirements - Class of 2023 & Beyond
In 2019, the Ohio Department of Education introduced new graduation requirements for students earning their diplomas in the Class of 2023 - and beyond. These new requirements allow students to Lead the Way on a pathway that aligns with their academic, and as well as personal, strengths and passions.
Graduation Requirements
There are three Ohio Graduation Requirements:
- Earn the minimum of 22 credits in core/elective subject areas, complete any additional local/district subject requirements, and take all required Ohio State Tests.
- Show Competency by passing the Algebra I and English 2 EOC exams. Other options after testing and retesting include 1 of 4 alternative pathways.
- Remediation-Free ACT/SAT Test Scores: Students must earn “remediation-free” scores in each of the three subscore areas, two in English language arts and one Mathematics.
Subject ACT SAT English Language Arts English subscore of 18 (or higher);
Reading subscore of 22 (or higher)
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) 480 (or higher) Mathematics Mathematics subscore of 22 (or higher)
Mathematics 530 (or higher) -
College Credit Plus: Earn college credit in a non-remedial math or English course (for the subject area not passed) to demonstrate competency.

Military Readiness: Competency can be achieved by meeting the requirements to enlist in the military, which can be demonstrated by a contract with the military to enlist upon graduation.
- Career Experience and Technical Skill: Complete two demonstrations to show competency, at least one of which must be a foundational option.
- Foundational
- Earn a score of proficient or higher on three or more WebXams in a single career pathway;
- Earn a 12-point approved industry-recognized credential or group of credentials totaling 12 points in a single career field;
- Complete a pre-apprenticeship in the student's chosen career field, or, for students ages 18 and older, show evidence of acceptance into an apprenticeship program after high school.
- Supporting
- Complete a 250-hour work-based learning experience with evidence of positive evaluations;
- Earn the workforce readiness score on WorkKeys; or
- Earn the OhioMeansJobs-Readiness Seal.
- Foundational

Ohio Diploma Seals

Ohio State law created 12 diploma seals for students to demonstrate academic, technical and professional readiness for careers, college, the military, or other professions. Each seal allows students to demonstrate knowledge and skills essential for future success in pathways beyond high schools.
Students will demonstrate readiness by earning at least two diploma seals, one of which must be state defined. Seals help students develop valuable skills as they transition to the next steps as Columbus City Schools graduates.

Biliteracy State Seal
A student must meet the requirements and criteria, including proficiency requirements on assessments in a world language and English.

Citizenship State Seal
A student can:
- Earn final course grades that are equivalent to “B-” or higher in all American History and American Government courses.
- Earn a score of 700 or higher on both the American history and American government end-of-course exams
- Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams; or
- Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in appropriate classes taken through the College Credit Plus program.

College-Ready State Seal
A student must earn remediation-free scores on the ACT or SAT:

Honors Diploma State Seal

Industry-Recognized Credential State Seal
A student can earn a 12-point approved industry-recognized credential or group of credentials totaling 12 points in a single career field.

Military Enlistment State Seal
A student must provide evidence that they have enlisted in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces; or Participate in an approved JROTC program.

OhioMeansJobs Readiness State Seal
A student must meet the requirements and criteria established for the readiness seal, including demonstration of work-readiness and professional competencies.

Science State Seal
A student can:
- Earn final course grades that are equivalent to “B-” or higher in a full credit of an advanced science course (NOT Biology or Physical Science).
- Earn a score of 700 or higher on the biology end-of-course exam;
- Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams; or
- Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in an appropriate class taken through the College Credit Plus program.

Technology State Seal
A student can:
- Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on an appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam; or
- Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in an appropriate class taken through the College Credit Plus program; or
- Complete a course offered through the district or school that meets guidelines developed by the Ohio Department of Education.

Community Service Local Seal
A student must document at least 45 hours of community service to their school or the Columbus City School Community over the course of their high school career. Up to 30 hours of the 120 required internship hours may be used towards the Community Service Seal provided the work meets the definition of “community service.” Community Service can be described as any unpaid work that is designed to help people in the community. The community service may not be for yourself or your immediate family.

Fine & Performing Arts Local Seal
A student must demonstrate skill(s) in the fine or performing arts over the course of their high school career. Fine and performing arts can be described as visual art, dance, theatre, and music.

Student Engagement Local Seal
A student must participate in extracurricular activities such as athletics, clubs, student government inclusive of three meaningful experiences focusing on various elements of 21st century skills (critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, information literacy, media literacy, technology literacy, flexibility, leadership, initiative, productivity, and social skills). Students must engage in the experiences over the course of their high school career.
