When to Keep Your Child Home From School

Columbus City Schools want every child to learn and be successful. School attendance is linked to learning. However, there are times when your child may be ill and should stay at home until he/she feels better or is no longer contagious to others. Below are some guidelines to help you determine when your child should stay home.

  • Temperature above 100° by mouth
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing during normal activity
  • Cough that interrupts normal activity
  • Pain from earache, sore throat, or recent injury
  • Yellow or green drainage from eye(s)
  • Rash or draining sores

School Nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing. Every Columbus City school is assigned a registered nurse who has received special training for their role as a school nurse. School nurses promote the health, wellbeing, and safety of every student. As a member of the educational team, the nurse supports student attendance, class participation and learning by collaborating with families and identifying and addressing health concerns and removing barriers that may impact the student's ability to reach their academic potential.

CCS School Nurses:

  • Are Bachelor’s prepared Registered Nurses.
  • Are licensed or registered as a School Nurse through the Ohio Department of Education.
  • Adhere to laws and rules of the Ohio Board of Nursing and the professional standards of the National Association of School Nurses.
