Peer Assistance and Review

The Ohio Resident Educator Program began in 2011, and is a comprehensive, two-year initiative to assist beginning teachers with mentoring and professional development as they start their education careers. The two-year residency program consists of a system of support and mentoring, assessing teacher learning, and exploring leadership within the profession.

In the first year of the program, Resident Educators, working collaboratively with their Mentor (a PAR Consulting Teacher), complete annual requirements through discussions and feedback. Mentors provide ongoing instructional support using self-assessment and goal setting, demonstrating use of authentic teacher work such as lesson planning, data analysis and assessment for reflection.

In the second year, Resident Educators work with their Facilitator (a PAR Consulting Teacher) who supports them as they prepare to submit the RESA Lesson Reflection for the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA). They also work to explore leadership opportunities or other district determined activities. When the Resident Educator has completed two years of the program successfully and has passed the RESA successfully, they can apply to advance to the five year Professional License.

PAR Intervention Referral Process

Consulting Teachers

Newly-employed teachers are considered intern teachers and are assigned to a Consulting Teacher for their first year or its equivalent. The Consulting Teachers also serve as Resident Educator Mentors/Facilitators for teachers seeking 5 year licensure through Ohio’s Resident Educator Program. As an RE Mentor/Facilitator, CTs will lead and facilitate professional development, use state-designed formative assessment tools, protocols and processes as well as document the RE's ongoing progress. In addition, intervention support is provided by Consulting Teachers to experienced teachers who may be encountering some difficulties.

PAR Panel Members
A seven-member panel governs the program. The Columbus Education Association (CEA) appoints four members and the Superintendent of the Columbus City Schools appoints three.
