CCS Taps Dr. Terri Breeden as Interim Chief Academic Officer
October 7, 2020 -- Dr. Terri Breeden has agreed to serve as Columbus City Schools’ Interim Chief Academic Officer for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. Dr. Breeden will serve in this role as the District conducts a national search for a long-term candidate.
“Dr. Breeden’s extensive resume as an educator and leader speaks for itself,” said Superintendent/CEO Dr. Talisa Dixon. “Her experience will be an asset to our district, as she leads the Academic Services team during these uncertain times amidst a global pandemic.
“Beyond just operating and teaching in a virtual environment, we have many academic initiatives ready to implement this year -- from our new ELA and math curriculum to our recent PDK curriculum management audit to the upcoming strategic planning process. Now is the time for Columbus City Schools to lead, and I look forward to Dr. Breeden’s contributions in helping CCS become a national model for urban education.”
Dr. Breeden is a Central Ohio native who has spent decades working as an educator in school districts in Tennessee, Virginia, and Ohio. She recently retired as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for Shaker Heights City Schools in Northeast Ohio.
“It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve alongside Superintendent Dr. Talisa Dixon and the entire team of educators in Columbus City Schools,” said Dr. Breeden. “As a native of Columbus, I am looking forward to serving our community to help all students reach their full potential. We have many exciting and critical initiatives on the horizon, not to mention teaching in a virtual environment, so I am excited to start working with our amazing CCS teachers and staff.”
Dr. Terri Breeden’s Professional Experience
Shaker Heights City Schools (Ohio) - Assistant Superintendent
Most recently, Dr. Breeden served as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for Shaker Heights City Schools in Northeast Ohio from 2015-2019. She retired from Shaker Heights in 2019.
During her tenure, Shaker Heights Schools’ School Report Card improved in several areas, including K-3 Literacy, Value-Added, Achievement, and Graduation Rate. She ensured all schools remained accredited through the International Baccalaureate Programme and also led the creation of a two-year IB early learning program which earned a five-star Step Up To Quality rating.
Stanford University - Course Facilitator
Dr. Breeden serves as a Course Facilitator for the Stanford University EdLEADers program, which is designed to address the opportunities and challenges of K–12 education system leaders nationwide and equip them to affect innovation and systemic improvement in their districts.
Loudoun County Public Schools (Virginia) - Assistant Superintendent
Dr. Breeden served as the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction in Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia in 2014-2015. This role had a broad level of oversight including 88 schools, principals, and all instructional areas.
Fairfax County Public Schools (Virginia) - Assistant Superintendent
Dr. Breeden served as assistant superintendent for Fairfax County Public Schools from 2006-2014. She oversaw professional development for more than 22,000 certified and support employees including the areas of leadership development, principal and teacher induction, instructional coaching, National Board Certification, and required teacher recertification courses. Beginning in 2009, she also oversaw FCPS’ accountability functions, where she was responsible for testing for more 181,000 students, research and evaluation, and division- and school-based accreditation.
Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (Tennessee)
Dr. Breeden served the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools district for 20 years as a teacher, mathematics program specialist, assistant principal, principal, and as the Executive Director of grades 5-12.

She has authored eight books on a wide variety of educational topics, including positive classroom management, mathematics, and raising student achievement.
