Musical Talents at Wedgewood Middle School Jazz Camp
June 10, 2022 -- This week, a group of students participated in Jazz Camp at Wedgewood Middle School. The weeklong camp gave students the opportunity to practice their instruments even after the school year ended. Wedgewood Instrumental Music Teacher Dustin O'Neil said the event is popular with students - the program has nearly doubled since last year.
In addition to practicing their musical skills, students were given the opportunity to collaborate with local artists to create a mural outside of the building. Artist Joey Aich works with We Amplify Voices, a Columbus non-profit that offers safe spaces for individuals to explore themselves creatively. Aich said the hope with this mural was to bring some of the school’s colorful interiors to the outside walls and give students the chance to express themselves artistically.
Over the course of the week, the students worked alongside musical educators to practice their instruments. The students’ efforts were showcased on Friday with a musical performance for families and community members. O’Neil said the camp plans to come back in the future to continue giving students the chance to practice their musical talents.
The camp was led by Jazz Arts Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of jazz and jazz arts. Tribe for Jazz, a non-profit organization working to preserve jazz’s legacy, supported a reception for students and their families to celebrate the performance.
