Superintendent’s Message to CCS Families - March 19, 2020
Dear CCS Families:
I am reaching out to all of our families with updates and information on our District’s response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This is a truly unique situation we are facing and one that changes daily as new information and guidelines become available.
We know our families have many questions during these uncertain times. We do not have all of the answers at the moment, but please know that we are working hard to find the answers or figure them out.
Here is what we have been working on and planning:
Academics
Our schools may be closed, but learning must not stop. We have a wealth of educational resources and enrichment activities for students on our website -- there is something for students in every grade level and in all academic areas.
We know that reliable access to the internet and to computers is not equitable throughout the district. Our staff is working to create solutions so that we can provide educational opportunities for all of our families no matter their situation.
Should the Governor close our schools even longer, our Academic Services team is working on what our plan would be in that long term scenario.
Free Grab-and-Go Meals
We know that many families rely on the school district for more than just education. We are committed to helping provide those basic needs during this ordeal. Columbus City Schools is offering free “grab-and-go” breakfast and lunch meals to all children 18 and under Mondays through Fridays at 14 school sites around the city. COTA is graciously offering free rides for students to and from each site.
We will continue to monitor the number of meals we are serving and can add more distribution sites if needed. Visit StaySafeCCS.org for information on the meal locations and on the COTA routes to each site.
Community Resources and Partnerships
We have heard from so many organizations and individuals in the community who want to help by volunteering or donating resources. Our staff has been busy working with our community partners to mobilize resources for our families. Many of these resources are listed on our website.
We also launched a needs assessment survey for families on Wednesday. It is important that our families fill out this survey so we can best match our community resources and partners with the greatest needs of our families. The survey is available at StaySafeCCS.org.
Staffing
Due to the guidance from public health officials, we have encouraged all staff to work from home during the extended closure period. School buildings may be closed, but our staff is hard at work making plans and decisions to support our students and their families.
Our teachers and our staff are available to help. I encourage you to reach out to your teachers and principals. Our district will continue to move forward and work on behalf of our students and their families during this ordeal.
Also know that we are here to help. We WILL get through this and we will do it by working together as one Columbus community.
Please continue to check our website -- StaySafeCCS.org -- for the latest updates and information. I encourage all of our students and their families to “STAY SAFE, CCS!”
