Reading Role Models at Trevitt
May 6, 2021 -- The guest reading program at Trevitt Elementary School that started during the pandemic is here to stay. Since the start of the 2020 - 2021 school year, more than two dozen elected officials, business owners, judges, police officers, and community leaders have read a book virtually to Trevitt students.
“Reading books out loud to our students demonstrates how much the community cares about them,” said Larry Carey, Pre-K Teacher at Trevitt. “Through books and reading, we can show our students the love and support they deserve.”
About half the readers have some connection to Trevitt. They may live and work near their school. One reader’s mother taught school at Trevitt. Another reader sells real estate in the community. He talked to students about a career pathway in real estate and the education necessary for that career pathway.
Larry Carey relies on the local community to teach students the importance of role models. This past September, he helped organize the virtual guest reader program. Using technology, Carey records every guest speaker reading their favorite book and then makes the recordings available to all teachers and staff at Trevitt to share with their students when schedules permit.
Despite the pandemic and the unprecedented year, Carey is still so pleased with the turnout of the special reading program at Trevitt. So much so, Carey plans to continue the special reading program next year; virtual, in-person, or a combination of both.
“All of our readers are role models for our students, which needs to continue to enrich our Trevitt community,” said Carey.
