Miss Ohio Empowers Parkmoor’s “Girls with Possibilities”
October 26, 2022 -- “I want to be like her,” said Neyviah Taylor, a fourth grader at Parkmoor Elementary School, after she met the newly crowned Miss Ohio, Elizabetta Nies.
Taylor is one of 25 young ladies who make up the Girls with Possibilities group at the school. Nominated by their teachers, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders work to promote confidence, develop leadership skills, and build positive friendships.
Principal Charmaine Campbell is on a mission to invite female role models and leaders from within the district and the greater Columbus area to empower the girls.
“My hope is for them to come together as a group, to become friends and leaders,” said Campbell. “I want to give them a sense of community and belonging with their peers.”
The speaker series kicked off this school year with a visit from Nies. She engaged in conversations with the girls centered around the question: what do you want to be when you grow up? All around the room, eager arms reached high to answer the question. Some shared dreams were astronauts, swimmers, geologists, and lawyers were just some of the dreams that were shared.
Nies, who plans to continue her visits with Columbus City Schools, made known to the girls that dreams can become reality. “I want them to know that they have potential,” Nies continued, “They’re the ones who will be the leaders of tomorrow and need to know they can develop their own unique potential.”
In partnership with Girl Scouts of America, Girls with Possibilities has been a part of the school for five years.
“Every girl should understand that they have a purpose. Their life is full of possibilities included in their future,” Campbell said. “Whether they want to be doctors, hair stylists, nail technicians, or even zoologists, those possibilities can come true. And every little girl has a dream.”
