Gifted Testing Timeline Updates

Due to the state’s ongoing restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be able to complete spring gifted and acceleration assessments as initially planned this year.  However, all students currently awaiting assessment will be tested this fall as indicated below:

  • Single Subject or Whole Grade Academic Accelerations - Students with referrals already on file by will be assessed in August prior to the start of the school year.  Individual assessments will take place at a district location following proper social distancing and health precautions as appropriate.  Placement team meetings will occur via videoconferencing prior to the start of the school year.
  • Early Entrance to Kindergarten/First Grade - Children with applications on file by the deadline will be assessed in August prior to the start of the school year.  Individual assessments will take place at a district location following proper social distancing and health precautions as appropriate.  Placement team meetings will occur via videoconferencing prior to the start of the school year.
  • Gifted Identificaton Testing - Students who had referrals and parent permission forms on file prior to the closure of schools will be the first students evaluated when school resumes in the fall.  Those students will not need to have another referral or permission form filed, and assessments will occur at their school buildings during the month of September.  The delay in assessment will not impact any student’s eligibility for services.  If a student who was already slated for testing by our office this spring should be identified as gifted in the fall and become newly eligible for a gifted service, they will immediately be offered the opportunity to enroll in that service as space is available.
  • Visual/Performing Arts Final Assessments - Students who were invited to audition or submit an art portfolio this spring will automatically be invited to do so next fall during the fall cycle of assessments.  Those students will not need to have another referral or permission form filed nor will they need another checklist from an arts instruction.  Those auditions and portfolio reviews will occur in late October.  The delay in assessment will not impact any student’s eligibility for services of any sort.

These timelines or testing arrangements are subject to change based on revisions to state health or educational orders or based on guidance from the Ohio Department of Education.  Staff from the Gifted and Talented Division will reach out to families to arrange for testing shortly before the assessments will take place. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we navigate these unusual times.  If you have any questions, please contact the Gifted & Talented office.
