Four Seniors Receive Helen Jenkins Davis’ 2021 Scholarships
May 6, 2021 -- Four Columbus City Schools seniors have each been awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the 2021 Helen Jenkins Davis Scholarship Fund because they demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and noteworthy school and community involvement.
The scholarship recipients are:
- Cynthia M. Bukirwa, Centennial High School
- Gilbert O. Clinton, Northland High School
- Tyniah R. Grace Sawyer, Eastmoor Academy
- Bianca M. Moore, Eastmoor Academy
“Each year, our committee is re-energized by the students we meet and the magic they bring,” said Gwen Wade, Scholarship Committee Chairperson. “We feel so blessed that they choose to share very personal gifts of their life stories and life goals with us. We humbly share our guidance, wisdom and direction with them, they accept it, add just the right amounts to their individual recipes for success, and as an organization, we beam like proud parents each time we help one of our students attend college.”
In 1988, the Helen Jenkins Davis Scholarship Fund was officially established. For the last 32 years, the Helen Jenkins Davis Scholarship Fund “Lunch Bunch” - a group of African American women, most teachers and administrators who wanted to stay in touch after retiring from the District, have awarded more than $140,000 in college scholarships to more than 145 qualified Columbus City Schools graduating seniors.
Centennial High School Senior Cynthia Bukirwa plans to attend the University of Dayton to major in Biochemistry/Pre-Medicine; Gilbert Clinton will attend The Ohio State University to pursue studies in Electrical Engineering; Tyniah Grace Sawyer will attend Central State University to major in Nursing/Social Work; and, Bianca Moore will travel to Spelman College where she will study Psychology and Forensics.
