Crew Players Remind Students to Stay In The Game As Students Return From Spring Break
April 17, 2023 -- Scottwood Elementary School students are making their school grounds more beautiful with the help of Columbus Crew players and other volunteers ahead of Earth Day.
The Crew players and volunteers joined students as they returned from spring break with a clap-in encouraging them to “Stay in the Game” as the end of the school year approaches. Students then joined volunteers from Crew outside the school to pull weeds, lay mulch, and write inspiring chalk messages on the sidewalks.
The effort is part of Major League Soccer’s Greener Goals Week of Service leading to Earth Day. MLS teams nationwide are working in the community to bring awareness to environmental issues and sustainability.
Fourth-grade student Kristien Blackwell said she was paired with a friend and then helped pick up trash outside the building.
“I had a partner, and we tried to pick up as much trash as we could,” Blackwell said.
Crew 2 captain Marco Micaletto was among the players interacting with kids as they made their way around the school to the mini-pitch on the playground. Players from the team showed students tricks to improve their soccer skills before diving them up into two teams for a match.
“We get an incredible amount of support following us, the second team. So this all goes two ways,” Micaletto said. “As much as we’re involved in the community, they’re just such a strong part of what we do as well. It’s really important to work and it’s quite enjoyable.”
