Columbus Board of Education Names Kevin O'Connor as Internal Auditor
The Columbus Board of Education proudly announces the appointment of Kevin O'Connor as the District's Internal Auditor. O'Connor, who has been serving in an interim capacity since August 16, 2023, following the retirement of former Internal Auditor Carolyn Smith, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role, spanning over 35 years in auditing government entities. His contract is effective May 1, 2024, through July 31, 2027.
Board of Education President Christina Vera underscores the pivotal role of the internal auditor in upholding the District's compliance with Board policies and procedures, emphasizing their independence.
"We are confident," she asserts, "that Kevin O'Connor's extensive experience and dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism will further fortify our internal auditing processes."
Before being named the permanent Internal Auditor, O'Connor served nine years within the District's Office of Internal Audit. Before joining Columbus City Schools, he spent eight years with the Ohio Auditor of State and over 15 years as Chief of the Office of Internal/External Audits for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Throughout his career, O'Connor has demonstrated his commitment to improving internal control awareness and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. He's led financial audits for large state agencies and various elected officials, including Soil & Water Conservation Districts throughout Ohio, and auditing identified Ohio Environmental Protection Agency grantees.
O'Connor brings a robust academic background and professional credentials to his new role. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Ohio State University with a major in Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant and is a Certified Fraud Examiner. These qualifications showcase his dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in his field. His deep expertise aligns seamlessly with his commitment to effectively advising management and the Board in executing their responsibilities as he expresses his gratitude for the opportunity.
"I thank the Board for their support and confidence in the Office of Internal Audit! I look forward to continuing our partnership with the Administration to maximize our value to the District through communication, collaboration, and building relationships!"," said Columbus City Schools Internal Auditor Kevin O'Connor.
As the internal auditor, O'Connor will report directly to the Columbus Board of Education, effectively advising management and the Board in measuring District compliance with Board policies and procedures. While internal auditors are not responsible for executing company activities, they provide valuable guidance to management and the Board in enhancing operational efficiency and accountability.
