April 26, 2024 — Columbus City Schools students and their families had a bone-chilling experience at the final stop on the 2023-2024 Pathway Express thanks to a visit from R.L. Stine, the award-winning author of the Goosebumps series.
The visit drew excitement from students and adults, many of whom grew up reading Stine’s scary stories. Event attendees could meet Stine and receive a signed copy of his book. Books were provided at the event, but some opted to bring copies of Stine’s books from home.
This was just one of the many activities available at Pathway Express’ last stop. The day's theme was urban agriculture, and families learned about beekeeping, growing plants, and composting. At one of the many activity stations, students filled their pots with soil, and agriculture professionals taught them how to put a plant in their pot. They then took these plants home to watch them grow over the coming months.
Maticia Flowers was a parent in attendance with her son, Isaiah. She said Pathway Express events like the one at the Audubon Center are great opportunities for Isaiah and other students to learn outside the classroom.
“[This is a chance] for him to experience something different: agriculture, planting, it’s all really good for him,” Flowers said. “This is a great experience for the kids.”
As the Pathway Express wrapped up its destinations for the year, Extended Learning Supervisor Brianne Pannell said this event series showed Columbus City Schools’ commitment to offering students a robust learning experience.
“Our district is dedicated to offering students an outstanding learning experience that fosters creativity, innovation, and personal growth,” Pannell explained. “The Pathway Express program inspires students to connect with the community and ask questions, enabling them to take responsibility for their learning and acquire lifelong skills.”
Although the Pathway Express is finished for the year, the learning continues through the extended learning team’s Summer Experience. This year’s Summer Experience includes project-based learning opportunities. One potential learning pathway for students is the Urban Agriculture program, where they will learn about plants and the natural world, much like at the Audubon Center.
