Columbus Global Offers First All-Spanish Speaking CPR and First Aid Course
February 15, 2023 -- Columbus Global Academy students recently had the opportunity to earn their two-year American Heart Association CPR and First Aid certification while also earning a seal toward graduation.
This opportunity was part of the school’s first all-Spanish-speaking CPR and First Aid course. About 30 Columbus Global Academy and Columbus International High School students were in attendance.
“CPR is good for everyone to know to help save someone’s life,” said Dr. Tonya Schuetz, school nurse at Columbus Global and Columbus International. “This certification can help them when they look for jobs now. The students are very, very excited.”
In the course, students received hands-on training in CPR and first aid techniques, including bandaging wounds, using an Epinephrine pen, and doing the Heimlich maneuver.
“This is the first year Columbus Global has started to do CPR classes for the graduation seal requirements, so we are experimenting to see what will work,” Schuetz said. “All the videos and books are in Spanish because approximately 75-77% of our students are Spanish-speaking.”
The Spanish-speaking class has been in the works since last Fall and took a lot of work and partnership to come to fruition. Columbus Global partnered with CCS Health Services Staff, Capital University School of Nursing, and ESL Department Interpretive Assistants.
However, this Spanish course was just one of many future courses that will be offered at Columbus Global and Columbus International. Columbus International High School students got the opportunity to take the course last month, and Scheutz plans to do another class in multiple languages with interpreters from ESL for specific languages.
“It’s a great program,” Scheutz said. “We are hoping that by the time they leave to go to their home school that they will have most of the points toward their seal completed.”
