Woodcrest Elementary Opens 2019-2020 School Year

District’s only year-round school welcomed students and staff back on Wednesday

Students are clapped-in at Woodcrest Elementary July 24, 2019 -- Wednesday was an important day for students and staff at Woodcrest Elementary School, the only year-round program in Columbus City Schools. More than 300 students in grades first through fifth headed back to class for the 2019-2020 school year. Woodcrest will welcome its incoming Kindergartners on Monday.

Community supporters along with Deputy Superintendent Dr. John Stanford and the District's new Chief of Transformation and Leadership Dr. Angela Chapman were there "clap-in" students as they arrived for the morning.

“We are so excited about our first day of school. Woodcrest is the only year-round school in Columbus City Schools, and we’re ready to get back to work,” said Woodcrest principal Brianne Pannell.

The Junior League of Columbus donated bookbags at Woodcrest Elementary The Junior League of Columbus added to the excitement and energy of the day with volunteers there to hand out backpacks and school supplies to every student so that they are prepared to learn on the first day.

“We are excited about this first day of school, and I know the students are excited as well,” said Dr. Stanford. “We are especially happy to be here this morning because we have the Junior League of Columbus giving out backpacks to our kids to kick off our Stuff the Backpack program with NBC4. This is a very exciting day for us and it’s Happy New Year for the start of the 2019-2020 school year.”

The Junior League of Columbus donated the backpacks and supplies as part of the NBC4 Stuff the Backpack partnership, which strives to give every student in Columbus City Schools a backpack and school supplies on the first day of school.

The historic partnership with NBC4, now in its second year, involves more than 20 community partners including PrimaryOne Health, CME Federal Credit Union, and the United Way of Central Ohio.

The first day of classes for the majority of students in Columbus City Schools is less than four weeks away on Thursday, Aug. 22.
