Columbus Board of Education Announces Timeline for Safe Schools Working Group
July 8, 2020 -- The Columbus Board of Education announced on June 30 its timeline for the selection of members to the Safe Schools Working Group, which will have a common goal of evaluating the safety and security program in Columbus City Schools.
“When we look at our safety system, we understand that we need to take a holistic approach,” said Columbus Board of Education President Jennifer Adair. “It’s about ensuring the safety of our buildings, physically, for our students and staff and community, but also the emotional and mental safety of everyone in our buildings.”
Culture and climate is something CCS has looked at strategically over the past year. As part of this work, the Board announced the creation of the Safe Schools Working Group in an effort to create a foundation of optimal learning environments for students, staff, and the community.
Since that announcement on June 16, more than 200 individuals have expressed interest in being part of this working group including current and former students, families, staff, partners, and members of the community. Interested individuals were asked to complete a survey to collect additional information to aid in the selection process.
Knowing that it’s critical to get a diverse group of individuals around the table, the Board of Education will take the time necessary to host community sessions to engage and share information about the safety and security structure of the District and to host several Community Focus Sessions. These sessions will allow the community to share valuable input about the community values of our safety and security system.
