CCS Director of Health, Family and Community Services Honored
April 13, 2021 -- Dr. Kate King, the Director of Health, Family, and Community Services at Columbus City Schools, has been named the “School Nurse Administrator of the Year” by the Ohio Association of School Nurses (OASN).
“I am honored to be recognized as the Ohio School Nurse Administrator of the Year,” said Dr. King. “My work is to create a voice and empower school nurses in CCS and Ohio to influence school health across the state.”
Kate King currently serves on the OASN Legislative Committee and has used her voice to represent and advocate for schools’ issues and health services.
“Dr. King encourages the school nurses she supervises to take responsibility for developing their school nursing practice and collaborating to advance the profession,” said Kelly Wagner, President, Ohio Association of School Nurses. “The research for Dr. King’s doctorate focused on helping school nurses find and use their voice.”
There are currently 110 school nurses in the District. In a letter to the Board of Education, CCS nurses shared their gratitude for the “personal sacrifices, tireless effort and skilled guidance” Director King and Nurse Supervisor Amy Hotler have provided to the school nurses and the entire school District.
The list of Dr. Kings’ accomplishments include:
- Working hard to find Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Gathering school nurses from Ohio to develop mitigation recommendations to use in all school districts
- Creating new health and safety guidelines, procedures, and forms
- Effective communication with administration and staff
- Developing and implementing evidence-based practices that protect students, staff, and the community
“Helping school nurses to collaborate with other school support services, community partners and provide evidence-based practice, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic, has allowed me to affect positive educational and health outcomes for students and is the highlight of my career,” said Kate King.
Dr. King will receive the School Nurse Administrator of the Year award at the OASN Conference this Saturday, April 17. She will also be recognized during the Excellence in School Nursing Awards presentation at the National Association of School Nurses this summer.
