February 14, 2024 -- Underneath a slightly overcast day with sun peaks and a gentle breeze reminiscent of spring, Clinton Elementary School was excited about February 10, 2024, as the community came together to celebrate a century of educational excellence.
Current and former students, parents, staff, education partners, and community members gathered to share stories and reminisce, infusing the air with nostalgia and excitement. As children played outside, inside, the hallways of Clinton Elementary were alive with activity, bustling with excitement as attendees reflected on the profound impact the school has had on countless lives, as noted by Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman.
"Today is not just about looking back; it's about embracing the boundless possibilities that lie ahead," exclaimed Columbus City Schools Superintendent and CEO Dr. Angela Chapman. "Let us dare to dream big, reach for the stars, and empower every child who walks through the doors of Clinton Elementary to unleash their full potential upon the world."
Throughout the day, the Parent Teachers Association hosted tables adorned with Clinton memorabilia, families shared cherished memories, and members of the Board engaged with attendees, underscoring the importance of legacy and the commitment to continuing academic excellence well into the future.
Among those in attendance was Bob Kent, a former student who walked Clinton's halls during the Great Depression and World War II. During a panel discussion moderated by Principal Jesse McKown, Kent shared poignant stories of rationing food, nostalgic games, and the tight-knit community of Clintonville that he called home, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of his time at the school.
"Being able to share in the stories of past students and staff affirmed the importance of the work we are doing and the impact that it will have on generations to come," said Principal McKown with pride.
"Celebrating a community, our District, and a school that's been able to rally around our young people for the past 100 years makes us proud and is something we can never take for granted," said Columbus Board of Education President Christina Vera mingled with guests alongside Board Vice President Dr. Tina Pierce. "To say that the District has an archived piece of history is powerful,” she added.
Throughout this jubilant celebration, a resounding theme emerged: a commitment and excitement to upholding the school's legacy while providing 21st-century education that prepares students for success in an ever-changing world. As attendees mingled and shared their reflections, a sense of pride and anticipation filled the air, underscoring the collective determination to propel Clinton Elementary into its next century of excellence.
"Our commitment to academic excellence and serving as a pillar for this community only rings stronger following this celebration," declared McKown, his voice echoing with conviction.
