National Principals Month: A New Chapter, Hubbard’s First-Year Principal is Building a Culture of Equity and Collaboration
October 09, 2024 — Each year, new leaders step up to guide Columbus City Schools and its students to success. This year, Kendra McGaughy is setting a new tone at Hubbard Elementary. Backed by her experience and leadership training from the prestigious Wallace Foundation CCS/Ashland Grant Principal Pipeline, McGaughy provides a wealth of knowledge to Hubbard. With a value in community engagement and a focus on equity, she brings a fresh perspective on student success and what it means to be a leader to her school.
"I am incredibly excited to welcome Ms. Kendra McGaughy as the new principal of Hubbard Elementary School,” said Area Superintendent Dr. Keith Harris. “Her extensive background in instructional coaching and commitment to equity-centered leadership will empower staff and students to thrive. I look forward to supporting her efforts in creating an enriching learning environment where every child can flourish and reach their full potential."
She started her career in the District as a teacher at the Fair Arts IMPACT Alternative School before transitioning to Linden STEM Academy, where she served for nine years. During her tenure, she gained valuable experience meeting early literacy goals, building strong student relationships, and creating positive learning environments. These skills positioned her for a leadership role as she moved into a Leadership Internship position before assuming her current role at Hubbard.
“McGaughy has a long history and background in coaching around academics,” said Columbus City Schools Leadership Coach Emma Corbin. “I’m excited for the staff to have the opportunity to learn with her and grow together to meet the diversifying population of students here. We’re excited for her to partner alongside teachers to strategize and increase student achievement.”
McGaughy’s passion for educational leadership is highlighted by her involvement in the inaugural cohort of the Equity Centered Principal Initiative—a multi-year program funded by The Wallace Foundation in 2021. The initiative focuses on building a sustainable pipeline of leaders committed to creating inclusive learning environments and advancing equity across the District. Through her participation in the CCS/Ashland Wallace Foundation Grant Principal Pipeline, McGaughy is part of a network of principals prepared to prioritize the academic and social-emotional well-being of all students.
“This is a great example of the work that has been done over the past three years under the Wallace grant,” Corbin said. “[McGaughy] is a great example of how an investment in the development of future leaders results in leaders who are prepared to address challenges that come their way while advancing equity and education for our students.”
McGaughy’s primary goals as a first-year principal include providing high levels of support for staff, continuing the great initiatives already in place, and fostering a collaborative and supportive school culture. Her vision for the year is to maintain the mission and values of Hubbard and elevate the school’s impact by engaging more community partners. She hopes to reestablish Hubbard as a cornerstone of Victorian Village.
“I really love the historical significance of this building here in Victorian Village,” McGaughy said. “I believe that this is a perfect opportunity to re-engage the community and get them excited about supporting the school. That means making sure that we can get more community partners involved and really show Hubbard to be the treasure that I believe that it is.”
As McGaughy continues her first year at Hubbard, she remains committed to ensuring Hubbard shines as a model of educational excellence and community engagement. If you are interested in becoming a Leadership Intern or part of our District’s Leadership, click here.
