Columbus City Schools Counseling Teams Earn OSCAR Designation
October 24, 2022 -- Columbus City Schools (CCS) counseling teams at Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, East, Briggs, and Whetstone High Schools have earned the prestigious Ohio School Counselor Accountability Report (OSCAR) designation from the Ohio School Counseling Association (OSCA).
The OSCAR, a continuous improvement document created by OSCA, shows the effectiveness of a school's counseling team's achievements and impact on students. Counselors statewide came together on October 18th to recognize the tremendous influence CCS school counselors have had in helping students achieve academically, providing social and emotional support, and helping college and career success.
"Our school counselors play an integral role in setting students up for success," said Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO Dr. Talisa Dixon. "Not only do they support academic achievement and guide college and career exploration, they help students learn to create positive interactions and develop conflict resolution skills. Their multifaceted work is a true representation of our commitment to a whole-child focus."
Ohio School Counseling Association commended CCS school counselors for actively helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents, working in partnership with parents, and focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development.
"These counseling teams are examples of the hard work that takes place in our school buildings every day," said Supervisor of School Counseling/Student Support Services Bill Mitchell, M.S.E, M.Ed. "They've implemented strategies focused on improving school climate and safety and reinforcing partnerships focused on providing families with much-needed resources in our schools and the community."
School counselors work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic, and optimistic aspirations for themselves. Their training and experience make them an integral part of the total educational program.
“I am thankful to the Ohio School Counselor Association for recognizing the tremendous impact CCS school counselors have on the lives of our students and families,” said Mitchell.
The humility surrounding the group is evident as the counseling team gathers to commemorate the ceremony with a photo. All smiles, the picture is taken. The team shares congratulations before dispersing for the evening.
“I am proud of our CCS school counselors for receiving these distinguished honors. Our CCS school counselors exemplify excellence in comprehensive programming and reducing non-academic barriers. They provide tiered support in the areas of academic progress, social-emotional support and college and career readiness and exploration,” said Mitchell.
