Career Tech Students Working Towards Nail Tech License
March 4, 2020 -- Columbus City School students are not only working towards graduation and college, but some of them are also working towards becoming a nail technician.
Downtown High School's career center now offers a nail tech program for graduating seniors.
Mikayla Berry Ross and Laticia Travis are two students in the program able to get real-life experience.
“When I would go to the nail shop with my mom, sitting with her, I would watch them do her nails. I would pick up different techniques that they would do,” said Ross, a Centennial High School student.
During the program, students will learn the ins and outs of becoming a nail technician.
“A lot of students like to just do nails,” said instructor Linda Bostic. “Having the opportunity to do what they want to do and not learn about skin and hair, when really their interest is in the nail industry, it’s a money-making industry.”
Latica Travis, senior at Columbus Africentric Early College, says her love for nails started when she was a young girl.
“My plan is to do this on the side when I go to college,” said Laticia. “This is amazing to me, because I know if I hadn’t done it here I would never get my license for this. To be able to be in high school doing this, this is amazing. I am happy I am able to get this experience.”
“Once they complete the program they are sent to the state board to take the test, which is at the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology and they will end up with an advanced manicuring license,” said Bostic.
The school’s Nail Tech Service is available to pamper you during the hours of 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Wednesday thru Friday.
