Q&A with Mark Caudill, Principal at Oakland Park Alternative ES
In celebration of National Principals Month, we sat down and talked with Oakland Park Alternative ES Principal Mark Caudill to gain some insight on the impact principals make each day.
Q: How long have you been with CCS? How long have you served as a building leader? In education?
A: I have been with CCS since October of 2013. This is my 4th year as a building leader and going into my 15th year working in education.
Q: What are the most important decisions you make as a school or district leader?
A: School leaders are constantly making decisions that will impact our little ones. I think the most important decisions we make as leaders begins with procedures and routines. These decisions impact student safety and can set the tone for their day.
Q: What is your proudest moment or accomplishment as a school leader?
A: My proudest moment as a school leader is seeing the students who have been with me year after year develop and grow into well rounded students. Several students have grown proud of themselves for the goals they've achieved which is an indication that my staff and I are truly making an impact.
Q: What motivates you personally and professionally?
A: My personal motivation stems from competition and my sincere belief that everyone has something to offer. Professionally, I am motivated by the opportunity to impact the lives of so many students. The greatest motivator is when you have a student who discovers their strengths and begins to take pride in their education.
Q: Describe a student that you have worked with in the past who has demonstrated resilience and tenacity.
A: Years ago, I had a student who faced many challenges within his household. This kid had a lot of things working against him and continued to push himself to be successful. Now the kid is in his 20's and a member of the U.S. Army. He's also starting his own business cutting hair.
Q: What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?
A: For anyone going into leadership, keep students first in your decision making. Take necessary risk and reflect on everything you do. It's a challenging job, but it's also very rewarding.
Thank you for all you do, Principal Caudill!
