July 19, 2024 – This summer, Columbus City Schools buzzed with excitement as students from across the District embarked on an extraordinary journey through the World Language and Cultures Pathway. The Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy transformed into a vibrant hub of multicultural exploration, where eager learners delved into American Sign Language (ASL), French, and Spanish. With enthusiasm and curiosity, students embraced this unique opportunity to immerse themselves in new languages and cultures, creating unforgettable experiences and broadening their horizons.

"This year was fantastic with all the stuff we were able to provide our students," said Summer Experience Building Coordinator John Vincent. "We have seen some kids who were very shy and reluctant to participate, but once they saw, I can do this, language is easy, and you see them gaining confidence and wanting to try to use it."

The Summer Experience was more than just a language program; it was a kaleidoscope of cultural enrichment. Each day brought new adventures as students engaged in various activities to deepen their understanding of global cultures. From the rhythmic beats of Flamenco dance taught by instructor Gabriela Guerrero to classes to interactive ASL workshops, students had a summer filled with learning and discovery, fostering a deep appreciation for the diversity of our world.

"I am really passionate about showing flamenco dancing here," said Guerrero. In this area of the Midwest, it is not as well known. Flamenco dancing shares a lot of culture and brings people joy."

The unique opportunities in this program add remarkable depth to the experience. Specialized instruction captivates students with fascinating stories that span continents and cultures. These immersive, hands-on learning adventures transform the city into an expansive classroom, offering students a treasure trove of cultural knowledge from all around Columbus.

"[Summer Experience] is an excellent transition because it allows students to keep up with their academics while also allowing them to have some fun," said Vincent. "We hope to expose them to several languages so they can then go back and pick what they want to study later in their educational journey."

A major highlight of the program was the eagerly anticipated student showcase. Under a bright blue sky, parents, teachers, and friends gathered to celebrate the impressive achievements of these young linguists. The atmosphere was filled with pride and excitement as the students displayed their newfound language skills and cultural knowledge. Navigating through their learning journey, students showcased songs in ASL, read books in both French and Spanish, and enjoyed sweet and savory treats from an authentic Spanish food truck. Their accomplishments were a testament to their dedication and the success of the program.

"[Throughout Summer Experience], we have seen students gaining confidence in the language and wanting to try to use it," said Vincent. "We saw that in our final programming today; they were excited to use it."

The Summer Experience World Language and Cultures Pathway at Columbus City Schools was a resounding success, leaving students with cherished memories and a newfound appreciation for the world's linguistic and cultural diversity. As the program drew to a close, Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy students and families shared the joy of learning, embodying the spirit of global unity and understanding here at CCS.
