Five CCS Schools Earn Recognition from State Board of Education
Dec. 11, 2019 - Five schools within the Columbus City School District were honored by the State Board of Education and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria for outstanding progress and student growth on the most recent Ohio State Report Card.
Burroughs Elementary, Columbus Alternative High School, Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy, Mifflin Middle School, and Watkins Elementary were among the schools recognized by the state this week.
“This recognition is evidence that our strategies for school improvement are working and that our students are learning, growing, and making progress at all levels,” said Chief of Transformation and Leadership for Columbus City Schools Dr. Angela Chapman. “This is a tremendous accomplishment and truly reflects the hard work and dedication to achievement by our students, staff, leaders, and families.”
Mifflin Middle School was one of 71 schools across the state, and one of just five in Franklin County, to be recognized as a High Progress School of Honor. The Schools of Honor program recognizes schools that have sustained high achievement and substantial progress while serving a significant number of economically disadvantaged students.
Burroughs Elementary, Columbus Alternative High School, Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy, and Watkins Elementary were among 173 schools in the state, including 27 in Franklin County, to receive the Momentum Award. The Momentum Award recognizes schools for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year.
CAHS received the Momentum Award for the third year. CAHS is one of just 69 schools in the state to earn the award for three or more years.
“The students, teachers, administrators, and staff honored today are shining examples to peers and colleagues around Ohio,” said State Board of Education President Laura Kohler. “We are so proud of these award recipients and the effort they put in to learning, leading, and growing every day. We are both encouraged and challenged by the example of excellence they are setting.”
Complete lists of districts and schools across Ohio that have warranted the honors are available on the Ohio Department of Education website.
