Columbus City Schools Challenges Attorney General's Petition on Expanded Student Transportation Obligations
September 30, 2024 -- Columbus City Schools today filed a motion with the Ohio Supreme Court to dismiss the Ohio Attorney General’s petition for a writ of mandamus filed September 5, and filed a response to the Attorney General’s emergency motion filed September 25. In both filings, the Attorney General seeks to compel Columbus City Schools to transport students to charter and nonpublic schools beyond what the law requires. Columbus City Schools believes the Attorney General’s actions were without legal merit and should be dismissed by the Court.
As of today, Columbus City Schools routes more than 37,000 students, including more than 9,000 charter and nonpublic students. This summer, Columbus City Schools identified additional students that we have been transporting to charter and nonpublic schools over the years beyond the requirements of the law. Transporting these students was overcommitting our staffing levels and keeping us from providing reliable and efficient routing for all students.
Columbus City Schools is working diligently with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to reach solutions to make Columbus City Schools transportation tenable for all students and will continue to follow Ohio law, as we have done throughout this process.
