Board of Education Appoints Committee Members for 2020
Jan. 21, 2020 -- The Columbus Board of Education appointed its members to six committees for 2020 at its regular business meeting on Tuesday.
“We wanted to really look at the structure and organization of how we govern, and so part of that means we don’t want to move too fast or too quickly,” said President Jennifer Adair. “We want to make sure that we have strong academic assessments and other assessments going through the district to make sure that our work is strategically aligned.”
Two Board members will co-chair each committee, with the exception of the Academic Committee, in addition to a third Board member sitting on each of the committees. The Academic Committee will include all seven members, as the Board will discuss the District’s academic approach and performance during regular meetings.
“All board members will sit on the Academic Committee, and we will hold that committee here during board meetings because academics are our number one priority and we should all be involved,” continued Adair.
The Audit and Accountability Committee will be co-chaired by Board Members James Ragland and Carol Beckerle. President Adair will also sit on the committee.
The Finance and Appropriations Committee will be co-chaired by Board Members Michael Cole and Eric Brown. Board Member Ragland will also sit on the committee.
The Policy Review Committee will be co-chaired by Board Members Brown and Cole. Board Member Dr. Tina Pierce will also sit on the committee.
The Public Engagement Committee will be co-chaired by Vice President Ramona Reyes and Board Member Pierce. Board Member Beckerle will also sit on the committee.
The Neighborhood School Development Partnership (NSDP) Committee will be co-chaired by Vice President Reyes and Board Member Brown. President Adair will also sit on the committee. Board member seats on the NSDP committee are all non-voting.
The Board of Education will not seat the Board External Monitoring Committee and the Innovation and Reform Committee in 2020.
“While we still have all committees that are listed in our policy, we are not going to be seating all committees,” said Adair. “This is because, again, we want strategic alignment. We want to minimize staff time, and we want to make sure that our work is being done at the committee level. You’ll be seeing more committee reports, more ad hoc committees out of those committees doing the work of this board. We want to be more strategic.”
Specific to the Innovation and Reform Committee, Adair added: “The principles of Innovation and Reform really carry through every single one of our committees. All of them should bring innovative ideas and reformative measures to improve our district. We encourage every single member of that committee to please engage in other ways and through other committees.”
All Board committee meetings are open to the public. Agendas for each meeting are available on the District’s BoardDocs page.
