Northland High School Named an ESPN Honor Roll Special Olympics Unified Champion School
February 11, 2025 — Northland High School has added yet another prestigious title to its name: ESPN Honor Roll Special Olympics North America Unified Champion School!
"Recognizing and celebrating students' achievements is essential as it honors their years of hard work and dedication to the program,” said Margaret Earley, intervention specialist for deaf and hard of hearing students at Northland. “This accomplishment is a significant milestone for them, and it was truly exciting to celebrate their success.”
A Special Olympics Unified Champion School provides an inclusive space for individuals with and without intellectual disabilities to thrive.
“Northland was nominated for this achievement by Special Olympics Ohio,” said Dr. Jason Johnson, principal of the school. “Schools that earn this recognition have gone above and beyond in meeting 10 rigorous standards of excellence, from inclusive sports and youth leadership to engaging the entire school community in activities that celebrate inclusion.”
Northland is one of four schools in the state of Ohio to receive National Banner Recognition this year alone.
“The Special Olympics National Banner Recognition is significant,” said Carmen Pinter, intervention specialist at Northland High School. “It honors communities, schools, or organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusion, respect, and opportunities for people of all abilities.”
Pinter, who was named 2023’s Educator of the Year by Special Olympics Ohio, knows firsthand the feelings of exclusion one might feel in a special education classroom. It’s Pinter's passion for inclusivity, advocacy, and her students that have helped make this dream a reality.
“As a recipient of this honor, Northland has acknowledged both the practical efforts made and the larger cultural impact of changing attitudes toward inclusion and equality,” said Pinter.
In addition to the National Banner Recognition, the school has been named to the ESPN Honor Roll - the only school in Ohio to receive this honor this year. This places Northland among an elite group of only 36 schools nationwide who exemplify what it means to be a Unified Champion School.
“This recognition inspires us to continue to create opportunities for students of all abilities to unite and show the world how great our youth are,” said Dr. Johnson. “I am proud that we have established a culture in our school where every student belongs.”
“For future students, this recognition serves as a powerful reminder that their own commitment and perseverance can also lead to similar acknowledgment and achievement,” said Earley.
Dr. Johnson credits Northland’s exceptional students, staff, and community for earning this recognition.
“I sincerely appreciate our teachers and support staff members for going above and beyond to engage our students in a variety of activities that build their self-esteem and confidence. They are the real heroes,” Dr. Johnson added.
