Columbus City Schools Students Win Awards at Ohio State Invention Convention, Advance to U.S. Nationals
August 6, 2020 -- K-12 students from across the state recently participated via video submission and virtual judging, to share their solutions to everyday problems for the 2020 Ohio Invention Convention State Finals, presented by Honda. Winners and honorable mentions were celebrated at the virtual awards ceremony Sunday, August 2nd.
Eight Columbus City Schools (CCS) students are among the 35 statewide winners who are eligible to compete in the 2021 Invention Convention U.S. Nationals at the Henry Ford Museum, next Spring. In addition, three CCS students were awarded with Honorable Mention were selected as alternates.
Grade Level Awards: Students received College Savings Awards and are eligible to represent the state at the 2021 Invention Convention U.S. Nationals at the Henry Ford.
- 3rd Place, 6th-grader Asha Brill, Columbus Gifted Academy, for Egg Pod
Industry Awards K-5th-Grade: Students received a $375 College Savings Award and invitations to represent the state at the 2021 Invention Convention U.S. Nationals at the Henry Ford.
- Education Award: 4th-grader Grace Gibbons, Indianola Alternative K-8, for Left Handy Helper
- Animal Petcare Agriculture Award: 5th-grader Jude McGonigle, Ecole Kenwood French Immersion School, for The Meadow Basket
Industry Awards 6th -12-Grade: Students received a $375 College Savings Award and invitations to represent the state at the 2021 Invention Convention U.S. Nationals at the Henry Ford.
- Environmental Award: 8th-grader Damian Earley, Dominion Middle School, for Garbage Lot
- Education Award: 6th-grader Miriam Rule, Columbus Gifted Academy, for The Grab-it Case
Honorable Mention:
- 2nd-grader Zavier Earley, Clinton Elementary School, for Bottom Shoe Shield
- 4th-grader Kingston Bradley, Berwick Alternative K-5, for Cell-Brella
- 4th-grader Kampbell Turner, Berwick Alternative K-5, for Stow-N-Go
Congratulations also goes out to Gifted Resource Specialist Lisha Perdue on being awarded the Ohio Invention Convention Teacher of Excellence for 2020.
Students from across the state virtually showcased their inventions at the 27th annual event, sponsored by Honda and backed by technology companies and industry innovators.
