Name: Mrs. Sharon Turchan
Years of Service at West: 13
Position: English Teacher turned Library Media Specialist
Favorite Part of my Job: Being able to help students and staff with multiple needs on a daily basis—also, it is quiet at times. I also love that I have the flexibility to still teach while doing my library duties.
How are you working to make the library a welcoming space for students and staff?
I am working to update the space, make it more clean, comfortable and useful to everyone. The library is getting a face-lift with all new furniture and signage. Creating a peaceful ambiance for those wanting to relax, work in quiet or even just read!
How do you encourage students to read and enjoy reading?
I just try to engage with students as they come in and look around at books. I encourage them to try books with subjects in which they’re interested. I am hoping to update the selection of books to peak the interest of more students.
Why is the library an important place for students to have in their school?
It is an important space because it can be used for so many resources and activities: Reading, research, relaxation, group work, meetings (formal and informal), device repair, etc. Come check it out! 🙂
