March 21, 2024 -- Eleven Columbus City Schools have been honored by the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce and Director Stephen Dackin for their exceptional progress and student growth on the latest Ohio State Report Card.

These schools are among 310 statewide, including 38 in Franklin County, to receive the prestigious Momentum Award this week. The Momentum Award recognizes districts and school buildings that have exceeded expectations by demonstrating outstanding achievement improvement while continuing to show student growth throughout the year.

The awarded schools are:

  • Binns Elementary
  • Cedarwood Alternative Elementary
  • Columbus Africentric Early College Elementary
  • Como Elementary
  • Huy/A.G. Bell Elementary
  • Indian Springs Elementary
  • Northgate Elementary
  • South Mifflin STEM Academy (K-8)
  • Valleyview Elementary
  • Westgate Elementary

"I'm proud that these schools are being recognized for the hard work they do every day to improve student outcomes,” said Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO Dr. Angela Chapman. “Demonstrating year-to-year growth instills pride and determination in our academic community as we pursue excellence. Their commitment to continuous improvement serves as a beacon of inspiration among their peers statewide, encouraging us all to strive for more outstanding excellence in our educational pursuits."

Districts and buildings earn the Momentum Award by improving their performance index by three or more points from the 2021-2022 report card to the 2022-2023 report card and achieving a value-added progress rating of 4 or more stars. It's important to note that districts and buildings are not eligible for this award if they have received an overall rating of 5 stars.

Dr. Corey D. Grubbs, Columbus City Schools Chief of Transformation and Leadership, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are thrilled to see tangible proof that our endeavors to enhance school standards are yielding results, showcasing the remarkable strides our students are taking in their learning journey. This achievement is a testament to our students, faculty, administrators, and families' relentless dedication and effort. It's a monumental milestone, underscoring our collective commitment to excellence."
