March 15, 2023 -- On behalf of the Columbus Board of Education and Columbus City Schools, condolences go out to the family and friends of Larry Mixon Sr.

Dr. Mixon served Columbus Public Schools as Superintendent for five years from 1993-1997. He created a new Strategic Plan for Columbus Public Schools, emphasizing academic achievement, fiscal responsibility, healthy learning environments, and parent involvement.

During his tenure and before his role as Superintendent, he served as assistant Superintendent (1989-1992), Interim Superintendent (1992-1993), and Director of Transportation (1997-2001). Mixon taught at Eastmoor High School (1975-1977), Safety and Security (1979-1984), Assistant Principal at Whetstone High School (1984-1987), and Independence High School (1987-1988). Mixon retired from the District on December 31, 2001.

Mixon graduated from Columbus Public Schools, earning his diploma at Eastmoor High School and his college degree from Central State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an avid fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors, his family, and his friends.
