CAHS Staff Hand-Delivers Care Packages to Seniors
December 17, 2020 -- It’s been nine months since many Columbus City Schools students have been able to see their teachers and principals in person, and this holiday season the staff at Columbus Alternative High School put a little cheer on their students' faces with a home visit.
“For this holiday season for the class of 2021, I just want to make sure that they know that we see them, that we hear them,” said Michelle Lewis, Assistant Principal of Columbus Alternative High School.
For three days staff and administrators of Columbus Alternative High School covered 197 miles across the city delivering CAHS Care packages to seniors.
“To be able to see Ms. Louis and Ms Smith in person, it feels really great right now,” said senior Aadejah Stevens.
Aadejah Stevens attends CAHS and Fort Hayes Career Center, as a student in the Health and Science Program for Nursing. She came overwhelmed with joy when Assistant Principal Lewis showed up at her home.
“I miss the interaction. For me I’m sort of an introvert so it’s different when I can decide I don’t want to go out and talk to people, but when I’m told I can’t go out and talk to people, it (stinks) because all I want to do is go out and see my friends and be back to school and talk to everybody,” said Aadejah.
Inside the CAHS Care gift bag each senior received popcorn, candy and a chance to enter into a ugly sweater contest. The winner of the contest will receive a chance to win a gift card to Chipotle, provided by the CAHS Parent Teacher Association.
“It makes me feel really happy,” said senior Daniel Ogbara. “It makes me feel grateful that they have taken the time to come out of their homes and the time out of the day to come drop stuff off for us.”
Principal Darryl Sanders says it was important that his students know that he, along with the rest of the staff at Columbus Alternative High School care about them and that their students can always reach out if they are in need.
“It has been very difficult for me. Not having that interaction with students and not having an interaction with staff it’s been sometimes overwhelming,” says Sanders. ”But having this opportunity to visit students today is re-energizing me. It makes me feel like it’s off or not and that we are going to get through this."
