Dedicated to Excellence in Education
August 9, 2022 -- August 9th is National Book Lovers Day, and what better way to celebrate than by picking up a book? From contributing to brain development to increasing social-emotional development, the benefits of reading are unlimited.
According to the Ohio Department of Education, third graders throughout the state experienced a 22% reduction in reading proficiency during the Coronavirus Pandemic, from 67% in 2018-2019 to 51.9% in 2020-2021. Research shows that students who read at home daily for at least 20 minutes can increase language development, improve comprehension and critical thinking, develop global empathy, and strengthen family relationships.
Columbus City Schools is committed to empowering students to discover their love of reading and improving literacy skills across all grades. Our #TogetherWeReadCCS webpage has all the resources to support PreK-12 students and their families on their reading journey.
Celebrate National Book Lovers Day with the following activities:
ENGAGE WITH YOUR CHILD WHILE READING - Ask them questions about what is happening in the book and how it relates to the world around them.
VISIT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY - Borrowing books from the Columbus Metropolitan Library is cost-free when you have a library card.
EXPLORE A USED BOOK STORE
READ OUTSIDE - Take your book outside for a change of scenery.
CREATE A READING CHALLENGE - Challenging the child to read for 20 minutes every day is a great way to build the habit of reading.
DIAL-A-STORY - Take advantage of the free “Dial-A-Story” program offered by the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Start by dialing 614-924-1800 to hear a new story and practice listening.
IMAGINATION LIBRARY - Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio offers free books monthly - at no cost. Accessible options are available for people with disabilities.
POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA - Post a picture/video of how you’re celebrating on social media with the hashtag #NationalBookLoversDay. This can be a picture of the book you’re reading or visiting the library.
Remember reading at home for at least 20 minutes a day has lasting benefits on brain development. Reading takes practice and practice makes perfect. Happy #NationalBookLoversDay to all who celebrate!
