CCS, Community Partners, and Local Experts Unite for Special Education Event

August 28, 2024 -- Moving from elementary to middle to high school and beyond can be a challenging experience for students. The journey can be even more demanding for families with learning exceptionalities. On Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Columbus City Schools presents the 2024 Transition Fair at East High School, 1500 East Broad St. The Fair seeks to help parents create a pathway for life-long student success.  Learning should always be fun so there will be with FREE Cleveland Cavaliers 30 minute basketball clinics and Touch-a-Truck.

"We are committed to providing parents with the information they need at every stage of their child's development," said Michalene Nelson, Executive Director of Accelerated and Extended Learning. "We have organizations that will showcase different opportunities for programs, education, employment, independent living, community services, social and recreational services, and adult day programming."

Families interested in attending the Transition Fair can register at bit.ly/CCSTransitionFair2024 to experience more than 50 community organizations, speakers, and breakout sessions.

Guest speaker sessions include presentations from Columbus City Schools, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and The Center for Disability Empowerment.

During the Fair, the gym, classrooms, and hallways of East High School will serve as access points to resources from local experts on navigating the move through the grade bands.

"We have amazing community partners that can assist students and families with the services, skill building, and knowledge in making choices that enable students to reach their post-secondary goals," said Steve Moran, Supervisor of Specialized Instruction and Inclusion. "We have organizations to spotlight all the different opportunities for programs, education, employment, independent living, community services, social and recreational services, and adult day programming."

The Transition Fair continues the work of the school-based high school Transition Coordinators. They are committed to providing opportunities that connect students and families with organizations that will support the students as they work towards their goals of education, employment, enlistment, or entrepreneurship.

"We are proud of the work that the school-based personnel has dedicated themselves to in connecting students and families with the resources across Ohio to ensure Columbus City Schools students have the opportunity to become highly educated, prepared for leadership and service, and empowered for success as a citizen in a global community." Moran continued.
