May 29, 2024 — Mariam Seck, a senior at Centennial High School, has always known she wanted to tell stories. With a passion for the arts and a vision for the future, Seck has set her sights on the film industry, where she aims to create powerful narratives illuminating the experiences of Black women.
"Mariam Seck came out of the womb with a fist in the air," said Lynn Taylor, an English teacher at Centennial. “[Seck is] confident, fearless, determined, and resounding. Mariam has an indomitable will with a voice to match."
Since sixth grade, Seck has been captivated by how film can transport viewers into different worlds and open their eyes to new perspectives. This fascination grew into a dedication to storytelling, particularly stories breaking stereotypes and challenging societal norms.
"I wanted to get into film because there weren't many TV shows or movies I could relate to regarding race growing up," Seck said. "There weren't many dark-skinned girls or Black girls on TV, and if there were, they were always surrounded by violence, sex, and guns. I want to get into film to kind of change the narrative."
Seck's inspiration to pursue this path is deeply rooted in her admiration of strong Black women who set an example for young women around the world. At Columbus City Schools, Seck sees this vision come to life through the District’s very own Superintendent/CEO, Dr. Angela Chapman.
"Some people think that because of my skin color or gender, I can't get to where I want to be," said Seck. "Dr. Chapman is physically telling you that that's not true. It's amazing and very inspiring for me. I know that I can look up to someone like that."
When she graduates from Centennial High School, Seck's journey will take her to Bowie State University, a prestigious Historically Black College and University in Baltimore, Maryland. There, she will pursue a bachelor's degree in digital cinema to hone her film production, screenwriting, and directing skills.
Her education plans continue beyond there. Seck's long-term goal is to earn a master's degree in education, combining her love for the arts with a dedication to teaching and mentoring the next generation of storytellers.
"[Seck has a] commitment to justice that fuels her passion in poetry, in academics, and in personhood," Taylor affirmed. "As she moves on to college and the wider world, she will be one to not just watch but witness."
Mariam Seck's journey is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and inspiration. Her commitment to creating films that uplift and empower Black women reflects her character and vision. "I want little girls to look at me and be like, she did it. I can do it too," Seck said.
