Success Cards

  • Emphasizing safety and academics, COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS will expand the piloting of the new CCS SUCCESS CARD in ten schools in January 2020. The Success Card is a personalized ID card featuring a photo, name, ID number, and home school - and will be used to board the bus in the mornings and afternoons, serve as identification during the school day, gain easy access to online learning, and check out books at any Columbus Metropolitan Library.

Students who are issued a CCS SUCCESS CARD are required to have the ID visible throughout the school day. The cards come with safety lanyards so students can comfortably wear and display their identification as needed.

Another great feature: students can scan the QR Code on the CCS SUCCESS CARD to access online learning on District computers through Clever.

The ID can also be used as a library card! Students can use the card at the check-out desk at their favorite Columbus Metropolitan Library branch.

WHAT SCHOOLS ARE PART OF THE PILOT PROGRAM?

Arts Impact MS, Beechcroft HS, Centennial HS, Colerain ES, Ecole Kenwood K-6, Gables ES, Independence HS, Indian Springs ES, Maize ES, Mifflin MS

HOW DOES MY STUDENT USE THE CARD TO BOARD THE BUS?

When the student boards the bus, they will wave their Student Success Card across a small card reader mounted on the right-hand side at the top of the bus stairs. An audible beep will indicate that the ID has been read correctly.

WILL THE PROCESS OF USING THE CARD TO BOARD THE BUS DELAY THE ROUTE?

When used appropriately, it should not delay the bus. With help from parents/guardians, we hope to have all students wearing their Student Success Cards each and every day.

CAN MY STUDENT BOARD THE BUS IF THEY FORGET THEIR CARD?

YES. Even if a student has forgotten or lost their card they will be allowed to board the bus and be transported to school. No student will ever be left curbside when trying to get to school. With help from parents/guardians, we hope to have all students wearing their Student Success Cards each and every day.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY STUDENT’S BUS ROUTE CHANGES? WILL THE CARD STILL WORK?

The Student Success Card follows the student with the following exceptions: If their bus route changes and they are still attending the same school they can continue using their card; If their bus route changes and they are still attending another school in the pilot they can continue using their card until a new card can be requested with an updated school logo; If their bus route changes and they are still not attending a school in the pilot they should turn in their Student Success Card prior to switching to the new school.

CAN I USE THE STUDENT SUCCESS CARD AS A COTA PASS?

No. This is currently not a feature of the Student Success Card. The District will look to build collaborations with local partners and stakeholders in the future.

CAN THE CARD BE USED AT THE COLUMBUS METROPOLITAN LIBRARY?

Yes. Your card will automatically be connected to the Columbus Metropolitan Library system as long as you have not previously elected to be withdrawn from Directory Information.

HOW DO I OPT-OUT OF USING THE CARD AS A LIBRARY CARD?

In order to opt-out of using the card as a library card, you must indicate that you are opting out of releasing all directory information. Prior to the pilot start, parents/guardians will receive a phone call and/or email with more information on the opt-out process.

HOW DO I GET A NEW OR REPLACEMENT CARD?

If you have lost or damaged your card, a new card can be requested by notifying the secretary at your child’s school. If your card was just recently lost, we ask that you look for one day before reporting the card as lost. If it is still lost after that time, please notify the school secretary and a new card will be issued.

DO I NEED TO PAY FOR A REPLACEMENT CARD?

During the pilot, no student will be required to pay for a replacement card. Information gathered during this pilot will help the District make a decision regarding replacement fees should the Student Success Card be rolled out to more CCS schools in the future.

WHAT IF MY STUDENT’S CARD HAS THE WRONG OR OLD PHOTO ON IT?

If your student’s card has an incorrect or outdated photo, please notify the school secretary.  Once a new photo has been taken and uploaded to the student information system, the school secretary will be able to request a new card.

WHAT IF I MOVE AND MY STUDENT CHANGES SCHOOLS?

If your student changes schools to a school that is not included in this pilot then they will need to turn in their ID card into their previous school prior to moving to their new school. If your student changes schools to another school in the pilot program then they can continue to use their ID. Once they have started at their new school, the school secretary can request a new ID with the correct school logo.

WILL MY STUDENT GET A NEW CARD EVERY SCHOOL YEAR?

Information from this and any additional pilots will be used to determine if Student Success Cards are refreshed each year or if Student Success Cards are rolled out to the entire District in the future.

DOES MY STUDENT HAVE TO WEAR THE LANYARD AND CARD?

Yes, students are expected to wear the Student Success Card both on the bus and during the school day.

CAN I DECLINE TO HAVE MY STUDENT WEAR/USE THE CARD?

If your student attends a school selected to participate in the pilot they will be required to utilize and wear their Student Success Card both on the school bus and at school.

WILL THIS PILOT PROGRAM EXTEND TO THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR OR TO MORE SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT?

Once the data is evaluated at the end of this phase II pilot a decision will be made as to the next phase.

WHAT STUDENT INFORMATION IS BEING SHARED, AND WITH WHOM?

Student Success Cards are not used to track our students! The card reader on the bus simply accounts for the student’s movement on or off the bus. Student Directory information is only shared with the Columbus Metropolitan Library per the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Board Policy.

WILL THIS CARD BE NEEDED TO GET LUNCH OR FOR STUDENT ACTIVITIES?

Not at this time. Columbus City Schools is always exploring how to increase efficiency and elevate the student experience, but at this time the Student Success Card is being used for the following: Safety and Security Student Identification, Bus Ridership Management, Clever Educational Portal (K-8) and Columbus Metropolitan Library access.
