Gary L. Baker, II, Board President
Gary L. Baker, II is the president of the Columbus Board of Education. He is currently serving his third four-year term as a member of the School Board. He was elected unanimously by his colleagues to serve as Board President in 2014 and re-elected as president in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. He also currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Council of the Great City Schools and as an ex-officio member of the I Know I Can Board of Trustees. He is a member of the National School Boards Association Council of Urban Boards of Education Charter School Task Force. He is a former member of the Ohio Schools Boards Association Board of Directors.
President Baker served as a member of CMACAO’s Westside Action Center Advisory Board and also served on the Boards of the Community Crime Patrol, Neighborhood Design Center, Homes on the Hill CDC, the J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center, the Highland West Civic Association, the Alkire Lakes Homeowners Association, and Friends of Westgate Park. He was a member of the Columbus Neighborhood Health Centers Community Capital Connection Committee. He chaired the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Master Plan Advisory Committee, chaired the Hilltop Community Reinvestment Area Resident Council, is a former Board member of the Hilltop Historical Society, the Greater Hilltop Community Development Corporation, FirstBook Columbus, the Friends of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and the Hilltop Business Association. President Baker was a member of the Greater Hilltop Area Commission for more than a decade and was elected to three terms as chairman. He served on the Boards of Friends of the Hilltop and the Greater Hilltop Area League for the Arts. He is a graduate of the Columbus Police Division’s Citizen Police Academy. President Baker was coordinator of the Westwood Heights Blockwatch, and participated in the United Way Neighborhood Partnership Center Urban Harvest Program as a master gardener. He served as a member of the Columbus Department of Development’s West Broad Street Commercial District Economic Development Strategy Steering Committee and as a member of the 2004 Regional Neighborhood Network Conference steering committee. He was a member of Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s Neighborhood Safety Working Group and served as a member of Columbus City Council’s annual Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition. President Baker has been a member of the Columbus Urban League, Uptown Progressives, Columbus Shamrock Club, and the Franklin County Democratic Party. He was selected by Mayor Coleman to participate in the All-America City competition in Anaheim, California in 2006, helping to bring back the title for Columbus. He was appointed in 2007 by the President of Columbus City Council to chair the Area Commission/Civic Association Work Group.
President Baker has been fortunate to be recognized for his public service. He has been recognized by Columbus City Council, Columbus Division of Police, Friends of the Hilltop, Friends of Westgate Park, Greater Hilltop Area Commission, Hilltop Business Association, J. Ashburn, Jr. Youth Center, Keep Columbus Beautiful, Mayor Michael B. Coleman, Ohio House of Representatives, Ohio School Board Association, Ohio Senate, Regional Neighborhood Network Steering Committee, and United Way of Central Ohio, among others.
