Design Your Own Learning Experience
In compliance with Senate Bill 311, the Columbus City Schools will offer students the opportunity to earn high school credit(s) through a credit flexibility program beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. “Credit flex” shifts the focus from evaluating student learning based on “seat time” to assessing students’ demonstrated academic and skill level or performance.
Credit Flexibility, or Credit Flex, is an opportunity for students to create unique learning experiences. Credit Flex allows students to demonstrate their understanding and skills according to their individual learning styles and experiences. Student proposals could include, but are not limited to: distance learning (online), educational travel, independent study, internships, community service, performance, and field experiences.
Columbus City Schools allows three options for earning credit through Credit Flex:- Individual Proposal - Develop an individual proposal to demonstrate course proficiency.
- Examination & Demonstration – Take an examination and complete additional requirements necessary to demonstrate content knowledge; options vary by course.
- Examination Only – This option is only available for certain World Languages, Mathematics and Advanced Placement courses.
Students interested in learning more about credit flexibility options should contact their school counselor for details. It is important to note there are specific guidelines and timelines to be followed for the Columbus City Schools’ Credit Flexibility option. Students choosing to pursue credit through credit flexibility are expected to review all guiding documents with their parents carefully.
*Please note Credit Flexibility may not count for OHSSA or NCAA Athletic Eligibility. Athletes are encouraged to talk with their school counselor and athletic director before pursuing Credit Flexibility.
