November 03, 2023 – Students across twelve elementary, middle, and high schools have partnered with the City of Columbus Department of Public Service to gear up for the winter season.
For over six weeks, students have selflessly volunteered their lunch and recess times to “Paint the Plow.” The program provides a hands-on learning experience for students to enhance their art skills and increase their understanding of the public service department by painting a snow plow. 
At Devonshire Elementary School, art teacher Tonya Willow worked closely with her students to develop a design that not only represented their school but a design that would be noticeable throughout the neighborhood.
“We’re the cheetahs, and we designed an idea that fits our identity and sends a strong, clear message,” said Willow.
Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther joined Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO Dr. Angela Chapman at the school to unveil the design and celebrate the partnership between the City and the District.
Opportunities and partnerships that allow students to explore creativity are crucial to student success.
“We want to thank our amazing staff and students,” said Dr. Chapman. “We are very proud of the work that you are doing at your schools and in your neighborhoods.”
When snow falls this winter and plows are called, the school's decorated plows will clear the roads for safe driving.
“We want to remind everybody in the community that when it snows, we all need to slow down and give our plows plenty of room on the roads,” said Mayor Ginther. “Our snow warriors are here to make sure that our city is open for business. Look out for some cheetah pride on the streets of Columbus.”
Schools across the District that have had the opportunity to paint a plow for their neighborhoods include Devonshire, Gables, and Eastgate Elementary Schools, Starling Pre-K8, Johnson Park, and Wedgewood Middle Schools, and the Fort Hayes Career Center.
