Buster Douglas Visits Mifflin Middle School
Feb. 24, 2020 -- Mifflin Middle School kicked of their Friday Morning Breakfast Club with a special guest in celebration of Black History Month.
Former heavyweight boxing champion and Columbus City Schools Alumnus James Buster Douglas was the special guest for the school’s weekly town hall. Douglas talked with the students about his life growing up Columbus and the infamous knockdown of the reigning heavyweight champion Mike Tyson -- a feat he says people thought was impossible.
“My parents taught me to believe in myself against all odds. If you believe it, you’ll achieve it, no matter who believes in you, just be the best you can be. I believed in that and it helped me become the heavyweight champion of the world.”
Douglas says Muhammed Ali was his greatest inspiration and advised the students to “dream big because you never know where your dreams will lead you.”
Despite not being friends, Douglas says he sat down with Tyson several years later as a guest on his podcast show. February 11th marked the 30th anniversary of Douglas’ historic defeat of the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson in Tokyo, Japan.
