Duxberry Arts Impact Attendance Policy
Duxberry Families,
This message is to inform you about chronic absenteeism & tardiness and its impact on school academics. Students must be present daily to learn and prepare to meet the academic standards set by the state, district, and school. It is important all students arrive on time to receive daily instruction; daily instruction begins at 9:00 AM and continues throughout the day. If your child is tardy or leaves early from school, it disrupts instruction. Every minute counts and this is why attendance and punctuality affect student achievement.
Please refer to these important definitions and information about what excessive absences are and what is the difference between chronic abseentism, habitual truancy, and excessive absences.
Ohio law specifies that a student is excessively absent "with a nonmedical excuse or without legitimate excuse from the public school the child is supposed to attend for "38 or more hours in one school month, or 65 or more hours in a school year."
The difference between chronic abseentism, habitual truancy and excessive absences according to 5 ESSA, 2015 6 Ohio Revised Code 2151.011 (B) (18) 7 ORC 3321.191(C)
- Consecutive hours per school month
- Hours per school year Habitual Truancy 30 without legitimate excuse
- 42 without legitimate excuse 72 without legitimate excuse Excessive absences—38 with a non-medical excuse or 65 with a nonmedical excuses
If you and your child are experiencing challenging circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact the office and ask to speak with the school social worker, Mrs. Takem, school counselor, Mrs. Griffin, and or parent ambassador, Mrs. Castor. We are here to assist in any way we can.
Please refer to the opening school letter online with a wealth of information and resources regarding attendance, including Ohio law HB 410. HB 410 refers to the change in how CCS must track missed class time. No longer are absences tracked only by the number of days your child has missed. Lost time is now counted by how many hours your child is out of class, both excused and unexcused.
The school social worker is at Duxberry twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays, and Mrs. Griffin is at school daily. Email contact information is:
