Goal-Oriented Growth, CCS PE Teachers Train with Columbus Crew
March 19, 2025 — Elementary physical education (PE) teachers across Columbus City Schools laced up their sneakers and hit the court at South High School for a high-energy training session with the Columbus Crew.
“Today is really meant to empower PE teachers,” said Community Relations Director at the Columbus Crew, Stephanie Cedeño. “[The Crew wants to] provide tools for them to put soccer in their PE classrooms with drills and skills that we know align with the state national standards. Skills that are tried and tested with our Crew coaches that we work with.”
Focused on goal-oriented growth, PE teachers from twelve schools kicked off the day by learning the fundamentals of soccer—dribbling, passing, and movement—before diving into more advanced techniques.
With each drill and demonstration, teachers gained the skills and confidence to bring the excitement of the game to their students, ensuring soccer becomes a lasting part of physical education across the District.
“I know the students will be excited about playing soccer,” said Como and Ohio Avenue Elementary Physical Education Teacher Karen Gynn. [Now that I have] background on foot position, footwork, putting the toe down, and etcetera, I can teach the kids with that and it'll flow within the lessons.”
Throughout their session, educators focused on the mechanics of the game, mastering footwork, strategy, and official rules. The Crew’s trainers guided them through step-by-step instructions on engagingly introducing soccer, ensuring students of all skill levels could participate. By the afternoon, educators ran full practice sessions, gaining the confidence to bring structured, high-energy lessons to their schools.
“It was a pleasure being part of the professional development day today,” said Academy Director at Columbus Crew, Daniel Lock. “Seeing the enthusiasm of the teachers who will be executing the curriculum. We hope that implementing the curriculum and bringing soccer into the schools will grow the love of the game at grassroots level and one day we’ll hopefully see some of these children in the Columbus Crew Academy.”
The professional development training is the first step toward launching the Soccer in Schools program. The initiative aims to introduce students to the game at an early age, creating a love for soccer while promoting teamwork and physical activity. For the teachers, the event is about learning new skills and refining their techniques, sharing best practices, and enjoying a day of collaboration.
“It's great to have a partnership with the Columbus Crew,” said Ecole Kenwood Physical Education Teacher Bryan Ferres. “Having the ability to have them come in and demonstrate and write a curriculum is a great thing for Columbus City Schools. [We are excited to] get the students excited about soccer.”
Through partnerships like this, Columbus City Schools continues investing in staff and students, ensuring physical education remains an important part of the learning experience. By working with the Columbus Crew, the District sets the stage for students to build confidence, stay active, and dream big. CCS is committed to providing opportunities that inspire growth, teamwork, and success in the classroom or field.
