The visual art classes at AIMS are designed to lead students through a developed curriculum from 6th-8th grade. Students are given the opportunity to choose the arts courses that are their passion and focus on those areas during their 3-year journey here at AIMS.
Nearly all 6th graders are given visual art and projects at this level are meant to "dip their toes" into the fountain of art. They will do a variety of projects that touch on various mediums while exploring the elements and principles of art. At the end of their 6th grade year, they will choose 4 unified art courses that they would like to focus on during their 7th grade year.
If visual art is chosen as one of their passions as they move into 7th grade, they will then explore more in depth art studies. Projects will become multi-stepped and take several weeks each to complete, More mediums are introduced, and each project builds upon the one before it as students gain a clearer understanding of how the elements and principles of art work together to create. At the end of the 7th grade year, students are expected to narrow their passion down to 2 unified arts courses for the following year.
If visual art is chosen in 8th grade, students are then taught using the 9th grade art curriculum. Students receive a high school credit for this course. Art pieces become extremely detailed with clear evidence of the students' understanding of the elements and principles of design. The course is yearlong, and students may spend up to 6 weeks on one assignment. I am all about my students creating quality art pieces as opposed to a quantity of artwork. As the "senior" art students, a show is produced in the spring to showcase their year-long art pieces. Students are not only able to display their work but may also sell their work in a silent auction style if they so choose. Students at AIMS also spend time delving into the world of art history to better understand techniques and where they came from as well as learn about career avenues in the arts.
If your student is passionate about the arts, then AIMS is the perfect place for them to call home! It all starts with a passionate teacher and my dedication to the arts as well as to the students of Columbus City Schools runs deep! I love to work with other staff to develop new and innovative ways to incorporate the arts into all other curriculums, which is something you may not see in other schools. Here at AIMS, our goal is to be a school immersed in the arts with a staff who collaborates together to make it happen!
My course partner is Ms. Perez. She is our media arts teacher. We work closely throughout the year as well as developing and executing the art show together.
